Revise a Novel
Get clear on what’s working, what isn’t, and what your story needs next.
You finally reached the most thrilling milestone for any writer: a finished manuscript. After spending months (or even years) pouring your heart and soul into your story, it’s finally done. This is a time for celebration!
But what’s the next step?
Perhaps you’ve sent it off to agents, or have begun working with beta readers and critique partners. Either way, the results start rolling in…
Agents are rejecting it.
Critique partners say it lacks energy.
Beta readers are ghosting you after chapter five.
And then that excitement morphs into despair. How do you fix any of these problems?
That is what Revising a Novel is here to do.
As a developmental editor, I look at the manuscript as a whole, identify the root causes of what isn’t working, and create the best next steps.
As a mentor, I take the time to understand your vision and what you’re trying to do, so I can move the story closer to your intentions.
Who This Is For
This service is for writers who:
Have a completed manuscript.
Know something is wrong, but are unable to identify what.
Have received feedback that they have no idea how to implement.
Are lost on where to even start.
Care about understanding the reasoning behind editorial recommendations.
Want to strengthen their storytelling skills, not just improve a single manuscript.
Want an editor who understands what they're trying to accomplish.
What We Do Together
Before looking over your manuscript, we’ll jump onto a 60-minute vision call, where we’ll work through your intentions for your story and what you’re trying to accomplish.
Then, I'll review your manuscript, looking for how accurately your story is on the page, and developmental issues that are holding it back. That involves elements like:
Structural weaknesses.
Character inconsistencies.
Plot holes.
Weak antagonism.
Opportunities to strengthen the reader experience.
Etc.
My job is to uncover the underlying causes behind the symptoms you're seeing on the page. After I’ve reviewed it and sent you my feedback, we’ll jump on a 60-minute strategy call to talk through story problems and possible solutions, so you know exactly how to improve your story.
What makes my approach different
Many writers receive developmental feedback in the form of a long editorial letter. The editor identifies problems. The writer is left alone to figure out the solutions.
That's not how I work.
I believe feedback is most useful when you understand how to apply it. That’s why I take the time to talk you through how to fix problems, give you resources and videos to help you build your skills, and extend email support for a month after the strategy call. So you have the time and space to become confident in your next steps.
