Writing the First Draft
Don’t just finish your novel. Learn how to write it well.
You’ve done the hard work of planning your story, developing your characters, and crafting a compelling plot.
The excitement to put pen to paper is high. After all, writing the story is the easy part, right? You just follow your plan and your muse.
But as the words flow from you, so does the doubt.
Does the dialogue sound cringey?
Am I balancing the right amount of showing and telling?
Will the reader feel this emotion the way I feel it?
Without any feedback during that process, it can lead to months of uncertainty over the quality of your writing.
That is the problem Writing the First Draft solves.
As an editor and mentor, I’ll read your scenes as you write them, reflect back on what’s working, identify what needs improvement, and help you solve problems.
Together, we'll move from the first page to the last, so you have a completed draft of your novel and become a stronger storyteller along the way.
Who This Is For
This service is for any writers who identify with these desires:
Want editorial feedback while writing, not just after the manuscript is finished.
Care about improving their craft, not just finishing a book.
Want to understand why a scene does or doesn’t work.
Want a collaborative partner throughout the drafting process.
Writing the First Draft is for every writer who finds themselves second-guessing their decisions, and wanting to know if they’re writing well as they move forward.
What We Do Together
As you write your first draft, you’ll submit pages for feedback. Every two weeks, you’ll turn in up to 20 pages.
I’ll review it and identify:
What’s working well and what needs improvement
Where the scene structure could be stronger.
Opportunities to strengthen the stakes and conflict.
Weak dialogue.
Inconsistent point of view.
Characters with unclear goals or motivation.
Etc.
After my review, we’ll hop onto a 60-minute strategy call and discuss the pages. That conversation is the most important part because it’s where we’ll explore possible solutions and work through problems together.
Throughout this process, my goal is to bring your vision to the page.
Why This Process Works
Most writers don’t receive meaningful feedback until the first draft is finished. By then, you’ve written tens of thousands of words without knowing whether you’re building strong storytelling habits or reinforcing weak ones. This service shortens that learning curve.
Instead of waiting until the end to uncover problems, you’ll learn to recognize them while you’re writing.
Instead of spinning your wheels, being unable to find solutions, you’ll know what works best for you.
Instead of writing alone and hoping for the best, you’ll have an editor helping you evaluate your decisions as you go.
That means you’re doing more than writing pages. You’re developing the skills needed to write stronger scenes.
